Day 4: Sun 11 Nov - Rayong to Chantaburi

Ride: 70; total; 120km

Breakfast at the hotel. Start biking to mangrove study center around 60km. On the way we stop and pay visits and talk to local people, see how they earn their livings. At the mangrove, we can walk around and visit one of the most successful forest restoration project of Thailand. Then check in and spend the night in Chantaburi. Dinner at local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Had a nice breaky of eggs, salad and cold meat. The coffee was hot and strong but needed lots of hot water to make it drinkable.  Asians have not worked out how to make even half decent coffee.  Yes, we are spoilt by having quality coffee widely available in Oz.

Left the resort on the buses at 8am and drove about 40km to start the cycling.   It was then a 26km ride to the Royal Mangrove Restoration Project.  They had replanted a huge area of coast with mangroves and it's worked out really well.  It was originally cleared for prawn farms, which I suspect failed.  There also used to be dugong in this bay but they were wiped out by hunting.  Unless they embark on a seagrass planting project I don't think the dugong will be back anytime soon.

Lunch was served at a beach-front local restaurant and consisted of stir-fried chicken, veggies, pork soup and deep fried whole fish.  Very nice.  The afternoon ride was very hot and during a drinks stop a storm came through with some heavy rain.  We were under shelter so were ok.

Finished the afternoon's very hot ride about 3:30pm at the Manee Chan Resort.  After a quick clothes washing session it was into the pool for a cool off.  A gin and tonic in the beer garden lit with hundreds of little lights followed.

It was then onto the buses again for dinner at a catfish farm.  Same food as usual, it can be boring when it is just about the same dishes every day for lunch and dinner.   There was a huge kerfuffle with the drinks bill.  The restaurant people said that there was money for drinks outstanding.  But everyone said they paid, etc.  Luckily, I didn’t have a drink.  It was finally sorted after about an hour of waiting around, counting and re-counting of money and empty bottle.  I can’t understand why they insist on handing out drinks willy, nilly and then don’t know who drank what?  They also wait until people are up and walking about before coming around to collect for drinks.  They should come around while people are sitting there with empty bottles.  Back to the motel and into bed about 9:30pm.  The aircon at night is so nice when it has been so hot and humid during the day.

This tour was a lot of fun, in fact it was fantastic.   It was great to have the other Aussies along, especially the ones I knew already.   ...
